DIET MASTERS

DIETMASTERS

MY YEARS AS A FOOD ADDICT

I was a heavy eater by the time I was 5 years old, only it was called a "healthy appetite" in those days, and they called me cute and chubby. By the time I was 18 I was a compulsive overeater. At 5'6", my weight ranged between 125 to 149, but only because I spent part of almost every month on some diet or another. I must have gained and lost more than 500 pounds on various crash diets before I turned 40.I could eat 3 half gallons of ice cream a week and 3 candy bars at the movies. At my favorite Oriental buffet I would start with 6 egg rolls and fill my plate (and myself) so much that the owners lost money. No matter what diet I tried, I dreamed of my next “fix”… boxes of cookies, bags of potato chips or maybe a whole pizza.I’ve always been an upbeat person with a good marriage, two children, and close friends, but on my 40th birthday I was feeling depressed. I took a walk on the beach and realized that my compulsive eating had to stop. I decided that I wanted peace more than pizza and vowed to put my extensive dieting knowledge to work. I re-read all of my material on the subject and designed a way of eating that would satisfy me and finally curb my appetite. My determination paid off in spades and changed my life. The numbers on the scale remained below 130 and before I knew it, I was helping curious friends and neighbors. That was the beginning of a long and exciting career founding and directing Diet Masters, teaching dieting classes and low calorie cooking and even self publishing 6 dieting books. Best of all, my weight has been stable between 124 and 129 for 39 years while I eat food that I enjoy.

THIS BLOG WILL BE EVEN MORE INTERESTING WITH INPUT FROM MY READERS. EMAIL ME WITH YOUR QUESTIONS OR SUBJECTS YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO COVER AT: ADVICE@LOSEWITHLOUISE.COM, AND I WILL ANSWER SOME OF THEM HERE.

TIME FOR A DESSERT RECIPE THAT PEOPLE OFTEN RAVE ABOUT

              CHOCOLATE ONCE IN A LIFETIME
                     (A very rich pudding cake)

1/2  cup flour
1     teaspoon baking powder
1/2  teaspoon salt
2     packages sweetener
3     tablespoons sugar
1     tablespoon cocoa
1/4  cup skim milk
1     tablespoon melted diet margarine
1/2  teaspoon vanilla
1/2  cup firmly packed brown sugar
2     tablespoons cocoa
3/4  cup boiling water

Sift flour with baking powder, salt, sweetener, sugar and 1 tablespoon cocoa.
Add milk, margarine, and vanilla.  Mix only until smooth.  Turn into 8x8 inch, pan
that has been spray coated with Pam.  Mix brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of
cocoa and sprinkle on top of the batter.  Then pour boiling water over all. DO
NOT MIX.  This forms a sauce in the bottom of the pan after the pudding is baked.
Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes until top layer is firm.

Serves about 6, about 154 calories per small serving.
Hint:  If this recipe sounds like you will love it: do not:  REPEAT DO NOT, prepare
it when you are home alone and do not expect company or family to share it with
you. If you love sweets, you can easily finish it.  The complete recipe is 925 calories.

A NICE AFTERNOON TO SEND MORE "POEMS TO LOSE WEIGHT BY"

I RECENTLY RECEIVED A FEW MORE REQUESTS FROM MY BLOG READERS  TO POST SOME MORE POEMS.  THEY WILL HELP US MAKE A SERIOUS SUBJECT LIGHT OF HEART.

                WARNING
Beware, my friends, that luscious cake!
It may not give you a bellyache
Nor spot your face with ugly pimples
But it will surely plump your dimples.
And make you fat where you were thin
And even bring on a double chin.

Beware my friends, potatoes fried!
A handful will destroy your pride.
And add some padding to your hips
Avoid them every night and noon
Or you'll resemble a big balloon!

             OFF

 My cat wears a collar
To keep away fleas
And my insect repellent
Scares off gnats and bees.
So, since they've invented
Repellents like that
Why not a repellent
To keep away fat?

 RECOGNITION

I have come to realize
That in order to cut me down to size,
I would be extremely wise
To sacrifice those pecan pies.

LET'S PRETEND THAT YOU ARE HAVING A PRIVATE CONSULTATION

THROUGH THE YEARS I HAVE HAD MEMBERS WHO NEED ENCOURAGEMENT AND ALSO SOME WHO HAVE TO GET BACK ON THEIR DIET WHEN THEY REGAIN THE WEIGHT THAT THEY HAD LOST.  THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS ARE SOME EXAMPLES:

1.  Jean had lost more than anyone in the class the week before and was very disappointed to see that she had regained the weight the next week.  My advice was to have her sit down and reevaluate what she might have done to cause the gain. I consoled her and told her if she kept a record on a sheet of paper and wrote down everything that she ate that it would help. It worked!

2.  One member had two sets of company during a three week period and began to lose control .  They went out to eat often and she was very careful with what she ate.  Her downfall was that after the company left, there was an abundance of potato chips, candy and nuts...just to name a few of the calorie laden items.

When she asked me how she could avoid temptation with all those 'goodies' in the house.  I answered "consider them 'baddies'" and give them away or throw them away." Those not too harsh words of advice really helped her get on the ball and back on her diet.

AN EMAIL SENT TO ME ASKING ABOUT MY CATERING DAYS

I RECENTLY RECEIVED THIS MESSAGE FROM SOMEONE WHO READ MY BLOG

Hi Louise,

I read one of your posts mentioning your 15 year career as a caterer who made very fattening foods during the years when you were in the midst of teaching your Diet Masters' classes.  I know that you had been a compulsive eater.  Weren't you afraid that you would start overeating again?

Thanks,
Della

Dear Della,

I had been teaching my Diet Masters' classes for about five years before the catering business came into my life. It started when I began to teach Low Calorie Gourmet Cooking classes. To skip the details: one thing led to another and within a year I became known for offering the best and most diversified hot hors d' oeuvres in addition to full course meals.

                                            THE REST OF THE STORY

Eating right and staying trim and helping others to lose weight was and is one of the most important parts of my life.  After gaining and losing about 500 pounds in the course of 23 years, I  was no longer tempted to overeat. I sampled what I prepared, but never regained any weight during the years that I was catering. My romance with food was a thing of the past.

HOW TO STAY CONTENT AND HAPPY WHEN YOU ARE DIETING

                                       BE SATISFIED WITH SMALLISH LOSSES

The person who loses 8 pounds the first week and 5 pounds the second, does not necessarily win the race.  This is one game where we can all be winners.
*************************************************************************************************************
Continue to diet until you reach your goal, no matter how long it takes.
After that, you can keep your excess weight off, year after year, while eating healthy foods that you enjoy.

WOW:  Don't let weight gains get you down. Make it a time to reevaluate how you handled your diet and  write everything that you eat down for the coming week.  If you see a weight loss on the scale, continue to keep a written record of what you eat each day.

EXCUSES PEOPLE GIVE FOR GOING OFF THEIR DIETS

THE EXCUSES THEY MAKE AND MY THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT

 COMPLAINER #1

Complainer: It is difficult to lose weight when you live alone.
Answer: Do not  purchase food that you cannot control .

Complainer: I hate to cook for one person.
Answer:Buy frozen meals under 350 calories.  Many of them are very  tasty.  Add a salad
or some frozen cooked vegetables to that meal.

Complainer:  I don't even like to cut up the vegetables for a salad.
Answer: Your favorite supermarket makes cut up salad.  It is usually found near the deli or where they have cut up fresh fruit.  The salad found near the deli usually has ham,
turkey and cheese cut in it with hard boiled eggs.

                                       COMPLAINER #2

Complainer: It is  difficult to cook for my husband and three teenage daughters after a long day at work.
Answer: Teach your daughters how to cook and  their future husbands will love you. Compliment the girls on their cooking. Another idea is buy some great Subway        sandwiches delivered and eat half.  Order them without dressing and oil and let your family add it at home.

Complainer:  Do you have any more ideas when we just don't want to cook?
Answer: Order some of your favorite food to go.  Some Oriental take out includes reduced
calorie choices. You can even order pizza and eat one medium sized slice and eat some of that salad left over from the night before.

MAKE A LIST OF SOME ADVANTAGES OF LOSING WEIGHT

THERE ARE MANY POSITIVE THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO US WHEN WE ENTER "THE LAND OF SLIM"..IT IS GREAT FOR OUR EGOS AND OFTEN IMPROVES OUR HEALTH.

JUST A FEW OF THE PLUSES

1.  Some ways you can do this is by losing 10 pounds or more and eat healthily. It can lessen your chances of developing diabetes and can sometimes help lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.  You will often look better and feel pleased with yourself.

2.  Cute story:  One of my members opened her refrigerator and she was ready to have a fattening snack.  She overheard her husband telling someone over the phone that she had recently lost 25 pounds and was looking good. She quickly closed the fridge and walked away with a smile on her face.

LOTS OF ADVICE FROM THE DIET LADY

Hint:  Lusting for or dreaming about the wrong foods won't make you gain weight.  Looking at honey buns or large Danish pastries behind a glass case won't make them pop into your mouth.
Always keep in mind:  devouring the wrong foods are just a momentary pleasure.

Hint.  Keep food you cannot control out of the house.

Hint:  Have a firm idea in your mind of how you will order in every type of restaurant.

Hint:  If you are having trouble staying on your diet, write down what you plan to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the beginning of the day (NOT AFTER YOU EAT...BUT IN ADVANCE.)

WOW....We do not have a lifetime sentence to be overweight.  we can reverse it.

SOMEONE NEEDED HELP STAYING ON HER DIET

I received this e-mail the other day on my blog and many of you may be able to relate to her problem.

Dear Diet Lady,

I stay on my diet beautifully during the week and ruin it on weekends. I spoil all of my good deeds by eating too much of everything and I  quickly regain the weight that I lost.

My husband likes to go out for a big breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday and I keep him company and eat even more than he does.  I get so disgusted with myself that I eat all day long.
Emily

                                                                  MY ANSWER

 Dear Emily,

Make a master plan for the weekend and stick with it.  Instead of breakfast and lunch, have 'brunch'.  Allow yourself about 500 calories of filling foods that you really enjoy.  The following menu will surprise you of how much food that can include if you plan ahead.

                                                                BRUNCH MENU

A large plate of your favorite fruit, cut up
3 - 4 inch pancakes
2 tablespoons lite syrup
2 strips crisp bacon
2 links of sausage, well done

That menu just gives you just one idea of how much food you can get for 500 calories.

                                                         MY OTHER ANSWERS

1.  If you go to a restaurant, order your favorite French toast and eat 2 thick slices or 4 thin slices.  Blot them with a paper napkin if they look greasy.
Q.  What should you do if you are served a larger order?  Offer it to your husband or take it home and freeze it.

2.  Another restaurant idea....One egg, bacon, potatoes (if they look greasy, go to another restaurant next time or order grits). Plus one English muffin or 2 slices of toast with butter or jam on the side.

3.  You could also prepare that food at home.

4.  My last idea may be too drastic...LEAVE YOUR HUSBAND!!!!!!

MARVELOUS MAINTENANCE PROGRAM ----FIRST PAGE

THIS POST AND THE FOLLOWING ONES ARE FILLED WITH HINTS OF HOW TO KEEP YOUR EXCESS WEIGHT OFF ONCE YOU WORKED  SO HARD TO LOSE IT.

Hint:  Use a non-stick skillet and oil spray coating such as Pam when you saute'.  Small amounts of oil or diet margarine or even a little butter are permissible.

Hint:  Own a reliable calorie counter and also continue to read the stats on food labels.

*****PAY BACK******PAY BACK*****PAY BACK*****PAY BACK*****PAY BACK****

Hint:  If you overeat at lunch, have a very low calorie dinner such as cottage cheese and a little salad or fruit.

Hint:  If you eat too much for the complete day do not get on the scale the next day.  The reason for this is, if you did not gain weight you will think you have a license to overeat without gaining.  On the other hand, if you gained 3 or more pounds you might overeat from frustration.  Usually you can erase that 1-day binge in one or two days by going on a 1,000 calorie diet.

DIET MASTERS' MARVELOUS MAINTENANCE PROGRAM (continued)

Hint:  Never triple starch at meals. My advice also entails not having 2 slices of 120 calorie bread or a large potato with a roll at dinner or more than a cup of rice. Portion size is important.Try to have the total starch calories at your meal to be under 200.

Hint:  Unless you can control having donuts, ice cream or potato chips etc.in the house, buy ONE donut and purchase your ice cream in individual sized portions. KEEP FOOD OUT OF THE HOUSE THAT YOU OVERINDULGE IN.

Hint:  Do not nibble between meals.  One or two small snacks a day are sensible but constant nibbling will put the weight back on.
Hint:  Major desserts such as pies and cakes should not be eaten more than once a month UNLESS YOU CAN SETTLE FOR A VERY SMALL SIZED PORTION (definition: the amount that would fit into a 1/4 cup measure.)

Hint:  If you would like a 100- calorie frozen dessert or 2 small cookies once a day, you may include one of these, or a similar choice, on maintenance.

Hint:  Continue to use  products  that will cut your calorie consumption if you enjoy them, such as low calorie dressing, diet margarine, your favorite 50 calorie bread, and my favorite: Healthy Choice Mocha bars.

Hint:  Avoid socializing with people who encourage you to eat more and tell you that you should gain weight.

Hint:  If you make recipes from cookbooks, try to use the ones that include the calorie counts. Eat one portion.

Hint:  Remember:  low calorie vegetables are nutritious and hold your key to slimness, especially if you have a large appetite. Do not cover them with large amounts of oil or butter.

DIET MASTERS' MARVELOUS MAINTENANCE PROGRAM (CONTINUED)

I HAVE BEEN ON MAINTENANCE SINCE 1970, AND HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE THAN 3 POUNDS OVER MY GOAL ONCE DURING THAT PERIOD.

The written program consists of 4 pages and I am including excerpts of the material.
1.  Attend DIET MASTERS classes as often as you wish.  There is no charge as long as you stay within 2 pounds of your goal weight.  This is your 'no cost' Thinness Insurance Policy.

2.  Weigh yourself every morning on a reliable scale.  If you are more than 2 pounds over your goal weight go on the Simple Simon Diet immediately.  Don't wait until 2 pounds becomes 5.

3.  Look closely at your dieting history and take an inventory of the habits you had that put the weight on in the first place. If you start developing these habits again, come back to class. Examples:  Were you a binge eater, or were you eating too many sweets or large portions of fried foods and/or snacks?

4. During the first few weeks on maintenance continue to stay on your program but allow yourself an extra 200 calories such as larger portions of meat or a slice of toast with your fruit and cereal breakfast. (I spent my 200 calories on sweets in the beginning.)

350
175
5.  Make the right decisions.  Talk yourself out of the Pina Colada that can be 350 calories and have the vodka and orange juice for about 175 calories or a wine spritzer for 100 calories or plain club soda for 0 calories if you aren't in the mood for an alcoholic drink.

6.  Two smallish pieces of pizza will suffice..don't reach for the third piece.  The key words to staying slim on maintenance is: The more you eat, the more you will want.

HOW LEARN HOW TO READ THE NUTRITION FACTS ON FOOD LABELS

TODAY WE WILL ADDRESS  HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FATS THAT CAN BE DANGEROUS TO US AND CAN OFTEN CLOG OUR ARTERIES, AND THE   'GOOD FATS'.

1.  Trans fat and Saturated fat are the ones that are dangerous if taken in large amounts

2.   Polyunsaturated Fat and Monounsaturated  Fats are the 'good guys.'

THE FOLLOWING FOUR FOODS WILL EXPLAIN HOW TO DECIPHER LABELS

A.  Nature Valley Oat's n' Honey Crunchy granola bars.

total fat:  6g for 2 bars (1 package)
calorie...190.....calories from fat....60 calories
Saturated fat 0.5g....this means that only 5 calories, which is almost nil, from 'the bad guys'.

THIS LABEL, AND MANY LABELS DO NOT MENTION #2, 'the good guys'.  It is a given that the 55 remaining calories are in healthy fats.

B.  Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter.

total calories for 2 level tablespoons 190.....calories from fat 130
Saturated fat...6 g....this totals 54 calories from the 'bad guys'...but 136 calories for the 'good guys'.

C.  Most hard cheeses:  They average over 100 calories an ounce and calories from fat 80.

Saturated fat .....6 g....which totals 54 calories for the 'bad guys'.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

D.  Roasted mixed nuts:

1 ounce (about 1/4 of a cup)
Calories.....170......calories from fat 140....SCORE:  ONLY 18 FOR THE BAD GUYS AND A HUGE 122 CALORIES FOR THE GOOD GUYS....

WARNING.....YOU  COULD GAIN  CLOSE TO 50 POUNDS A YEAR IF YOU EAT A 1/2 CUP A DAY IN ADDITION TO YOUR REGULAR MENU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A HEALTHY, EASY, LOW CALORIE, NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER

AFTER READING THE TITLE YOU MUST BE WONDERING HOW IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A CHOWDER WITH ALL OF THOSE ATTRIBUTES.  THIS RECIPE IS SIMILAR TO ONE MY  YOUNG COUSIN CAROLE JO, 'THE QUEEN OF LEAN', SHARED WITH ME RECENTLY.

THE EAT IT ALL AND STAY SMALL NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER

1can of Progresso Fat Free New England Clam Chowder,  heated
4 or more cups of cooked fresh or frozen low calorie   vegetables

Fill the bottom of one very large bowl, or two regular sized bowls with drained, hot cooked vegetables. Pour the soup over vegetables.
This is a main course meal:  One huge serving is about 300 calories.

Variations:  You could chop one piece of string cheese, for an extra 60 calories, into the hot soup.

Vegetable varieties:  Cooked French style frozen green beans, fresh baby  spinach, sliced or shredded carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, bell peppers (love that color!) green onions, mushrooms and broccoli to name some.
Hint:  Since this is your MAIN COURSE: you could add a small can of drained chopped clams to this dish.

WORDS OF ADVICE THAT WILL HELP YOU STAY ON YOUR DIET

THE FOLLOWING IDEAS WILL HELP YOU STAY FOCUSED WHEN YOU ARE ON A DIET

1.  Heed my advice when I mention that the best way to lose weight is to go on a plan that is well balanced and includes foods that you enjoy.  Few people that go on a similar diet do not tend to regain their weight.

Just about everyone rapidly  regains on a diet that promises instant success or one that is too stringent.

2.  Slowly "savor and enjoy" your food" but don't  "devour and inhale your food."

3.  Ice cream is 100 to 340 calories per half cup. If you figure the calories per half gallon it would total 1600  to 5,440.

My ice cream advice:  If you tend to compulsively eat large amounts of ice cream at one sitting the way I used to, a half gallon would just last a few days.  First of all:  I never purchase any ice cream over 130 calories a half of cup and NEVER eat more than a half cup a day.

MORE POEMS TO LOSE WEIGHT BY

                                         ENJOY THE FOLLOWING TWO POEMS

                                                        TEMPTATION

That little imp inside me
Chortled with fiendish glee
As he whispered, "Have a cupcake,
There's no one round to see."

"SCRAM" I told the devilish one,
So loud that he turned pale.
"The whole world would know it
When I stepped upon the scale."

THREE LITTLE WORDS

Three little words are carved in my heart,
And mean so much to me.
Not  "I love you", nor  "Please be mine,"

Three other words remain therein,
Across my soul they march
Engraved within my heart and mind--

SOME MORE THOUGHTS AND HINTS ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS

I AM SIFTING THROUGH SOME OF MY PREVIOUS MEETINGS AND WANT TO SHARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS. THIS POST INCLUDES A POTPOURRI OF UNRELATED INFORMATION.

1.  Losing weight is not just about looks but about being on a nutritious, easy to follow diet.
Eating properly and losing excess weight can improve your health and lessen your chances of diabetes, high blood pressure or heart failure.

2.  Spurulina is a blue-green algae found in ponds.  The company who sold it claimed that it worked in the appetite center of the brain to help you eat less.  yes? NO!

3.  Another fraud:  Chinese Slimming Tea was packaged in a small box with 20 teabags for $19.95.  Many people became ill from it.

4. Tape a before and after picture onto your refrigerator as an incentive.  One should be a current overweight picture of you and the other when you were slim. IF YOU HAVE NO SLIM PICTURE, FIND A PICTURE FROM A MAGAZINE OF HOW YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR BODY TO LOOK.

LEARN TO EAT RESTAURANT MEALS LIKE A DIET MASTER

YOU WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE IMPROVING IF YOU DON'T LOOK AT THE DESSERT MENU.

I USED TO LOOK AT THE DISPLAY OF DESSERT ITEMS THAT WERE IN A GLASS ENCLOSED CASE AS  WE WALKED INTO THE DINING ROOM OR WAITED FOR A TABLE.

A FEW YEARS AGO I WAS IN A RESTAURANT AND SPOTTED THE WORDS 'Lite and Lean' on their menu.  Those words did not mean what they said in this case.
The food listed underneath the title said, " grilled chicken sandwich..carrots in a honey glaze, apple sauce and homemade ice cream with fudge sauce and whipped cream. That meal must have been about 1,000 calorie.

Remember:  Just looking at food or craving it will not put on pounds.

JUST WHAT DO THE WORDS " CHEATING ON A DIET" REALLY MEAN?

THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL EXPLAINS MY THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT AND MAY HELP YOU WITH YOUR QUEST TO LOSE WEIGHT.

1.  Eating a very large piece of grilled fish:
....Yes, if it is not heavily coated with oil and you do not use more than 1 tablespoon of tartar sauce, which would only be 90 extra calories.  Most people use much more than that.    When having the fish at home, make my low calorie version of tartar sauce with 2 tablespoons drained sweet relish and four tablespoons 15 calorie  lite mayo.
That totals only 100 calories.

2.  Eating a half of a 14.4 ounce bag of frozen green beans with your meal on a hungry day.
.... The whole bag is only 150 calories and half the bag totals 75 calories.  If you do not smother it with butter or margarine that will be an excellent choice.

3.   Ordering a tuna salad sandwich on a bagel at the deli.
.... For Shame!  The bagel alone will be about 320 calories and they mix the tuna with a
huge amount of mayo plus they spread both sides of the bagel with mayo. It usually totals 700 calories or even more. Plus, they often include potato chips or French fries on the side.

4.    Will the 12 ounce bag of cookies that was on sale get you into trouble with your dieting?
A.    If you have a history of eating a whole container of cookies at one sitting the answer
is an emphatic NO, DO NOT BUY THEM.

5.     Peaches are the best you ever had this year and you purchase a 2 pound bag and finish them all in one afternoon.
....You go for it girl!  You took my advice on the other 4 scenarios  and you owe yourself this treat.  The full 2 pounds are only 300 calories.  Chances are, you will be so content that you will tend to eat a little less at your next meal.

                                             MY ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS

IF YOU HAVE CHEATED ON YOUR DIET:  TALK TO YOURSELF AND SAY, "IN THE
GREAT GAME OF LOSING WEIGHT:  I HAVE STUBBED MY TOE, BUT I AM NOT A FAILURE.  I WILL PICK MYSELF AND START ALL OVER AGAIN."

FOUR EASY LOW CALORIE SALAD DRESSING IDEAS AND RECIPES

I HAVE SEVERAL PAGES OF SALAD DRESSING RECIPES IN MY BOOKS, BUT THESE JUST TAKE SECONDS TO PREPARE AND ARE LOW IN CALORIES AND DELICIOUS.

1.  Louise's Super Idea Dressing:  Purchase any bottled dressing in which the oil separates to the top. Remove the oil and discard it.  (An 800 calorie bottle becomes less than 200 calories with this method .)  Enjoy the dressing this way or refill the bottle with a mild vinegar such as rice vinegar. This tastes wonderful.

2.  Sprinkle rice vinegar, seasoned rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar over salad.

3.  Crumble 1 tablespoon of blue cheese or 1 tablespoon of plain or seasoned feta cheese
      over the salad.

4.  Combine any dry non-fat dressing mix with any combination of low fat sour cream, fat free yogurt, or fat free or low fat mayonnaise. Read the label for the amount of calories in the   mayonnaise and purchase any that are under 25 calories a tablespoon.  Thin with a little skim milk if necessary.

THE 21 3-DAY DIET AND THE WINNER IS: "THE ALMOST ICE CREAM"

A FEW DAYS AGO I MENTIONED THAT I WOULD POST A THREE DAY DIET FROM A BOOK  THAT I WROTE. I ASKED MY READERS TO CHOOSE ONE FROM A PARTIAL LIST.  SEVERAL PEOPLE MENTIONED THE 'HOAGIE LOVERS DIET', BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, IT WAS 'ALMOST ICE CREAM' THAT WON BY A LANDSLIDE.

What Is An Almost  Ice Cream Treat?

It can be your choice of any ice cream or sherbet type product that totals under 200 calories for the day.
Examples:
Frozen fudge bars, yogurt pops or ice cream sandwiches that are 35 to 100 calories.
You also might enjoy fruit and juice or fruit and cream bars.  These range from 20 to 100 calories each.  They can be purchased at a market or made at home.

                                                      Almost Ice Cream Menu
                                                                   First Day

Breakfast

1/2 large banana
1 frozen waffle under 120 calories
1 tablespoon lite syrup
1/2 cup skim milk
Total:about 255 calories

Lunch

2 slices 50 calorie bread
2 ounces sliced turkey
lettuce and small tomato
1 tablespoon 15 calorie mayo
1/2 cup sliced cucumbers
1/2 cup sliced carrots
ALMOST ICE CREAM TREAT
Total:about 335 calories

Dinner

1/2 grapefruit
6 ounces of fish brushed with
2 teaspoons melted diet margarine
and sprinkled with paprika and
seasonings and baked or grilled
1/2 cup cooked rice
1/2 (16 -ounce package) frozen low-calorie
vegetables, cooked
ALMOST ICE CREAM TREAT
Total:about 515 calories

TOTAL CALORIES FOR THE DAY....1105

JUST A FEW FACTS ABOUT THESE DIETS

There are so many variations and hints on each and every one of  the 21 diets it would be impossible to include them on my posts.

1.  If you like the breakfast from day one best,  you may have it 3 days in a row.
2. You have a long list of low calorie vegetables in the book that can be exchanged.
3. Every page is filled with variations and hints.  There are sections with questions and
answers, recipes and a shopping list.
4. The book explains that you can substitute the rice for a small potato and the
     grapefruit for another fruit.

MEGIDOSES OF SUPPLEMENTS CAN BE EXPENSIVE OR DANGEOUS

THE FOLLOWING TWO SCENARIOS WILL EXPLAIN HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO CONSULT WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN WHEN YOU ARE SOLD UNFAMILIAR PRODUCTS
1.  One of my younger members, Carolee,  approached me after a meeting and showed me a bag full of various products that she had purchased in a health food store that cost her about $220.   She told the clerk that she had been feeling a little tired lately. When Carolee asked for my opinion of them, I suggested that she check with her physician and get his advice.  He told her to bring every one of them back and gave her the names of two items.  The price totaled under $25  and  they did the trick.

2.  Another member, Diane L. wanted something natural for menstrual pains and went to a similar store.  They sold her mega doses of bone meal and she ended up in the hospital with lead poisoning within a fairly short time.

HOW TO HANDLE FOOD IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS

WHEN IT COMES TO DECIDING WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO EAT AT THE FOLLOWING TWO PLACES HAVE A PLAN AND FOLLOW IT THROUGH.

               SNACKING AT THE MOVIES

1.THE MOVIES: Their concession stands are full of fattening treats (at a price) that can coax you into devouring 500 to 1,000 calories. To name just a few: large candy bars, buttered popcorn in various sizes;  from gigantic which is as huge as a bucket; to the senior size which is usually 375 calories. It  would  be ideal to order it without butter. Their drinks are sold in sizes from fairly large to 32ounces...If you buy the latter, they give you a free refill..NOT CALORIE FREE.  If you opt for the largest size and have a refill you will miss part of the film running to the rest room.

THE DIET MASTER WAY TO HANDLE REFRESHMENTS:  Bring a package of Lifesavers in your purse or pocket or opt for a small plastic bag with 2 - 50 calorie cookies or something that does not make a crunching noise when you eat.  Use your imagination.  Order their small size diet soda. Another idea is to eat before you go to a movie and don't order anything.

Before I began Diet Masters I ALWAYS  used to eat 3 candy bars at a movie...Two of them would be finished before the coming attractions were over!

                                             CARD PARTIES WITH THE 'GIRLS'

2. CARD PARTIES: It seems that each hostess tries to outdo herself by having the most exciting refreshments.  She might have dishes of nuts which she keeps refilling on all of the tables.  Sometimes there will be candy that her son sent for her birthday. It is her  pleasure to share this as she recently lost weight and does not want it around the house to tempt her. There can be many more fattening foods but YOU are not going to overindulge..YOU have a 'stay slim plan'.

THE DIET MASTERS' PLAN:  If the hostess or any other people asks you why you are not having the wonderful cake or whatever calorie-laden foods that are served, do not mention the words weight or diet.  Just put a little smile and your face and say that you had a very large dinner or lunch, etc. and that all of the food looks delicious..

THE REST OF THE PLAN: You have promised yourself that you would not eat all of those empty hundreds of calories that are usually offered but will have some of that great fruit that you have at home, or a large 120 calorie smoothie...anything that suits your fancy that is under 150 calories.

SOME COMPLIMENTS FROM A HAPPY DIET MASTERS' MEMBER

THE FOLLOWING LETTER IS FROM A YOUNG WOMAN NAMED MEG WARD

"I would  be pleased to recommend Louise Lawhon as the best calorie manager I know.  She teaches you how to get the most food for your calories. This helps you stay satisfied.  I used her 3-day diet book for six months.  Initially, I lost 12 pounds the first month.  It was amazing, because I never felt deprived.  At the end of those six months I had lost a total of 53 pounds and had reached my goal.  I have kept my excess weight off for over 2 years on the maintenance plan but if it inches up more than two pounds over my goal I go back to the 3-day diets.. My favorite is the Watermelon diet.
It is so nice to be able to mix and match between the diets. They are all excellent.  I can't thank Louise enough for showing me this fun, flexible way to lose weight."

                                                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                                                      Meg Ward

CHOOSE HOW YOU LOSE 21-3 DAY DIETS

The title above is the name of one of the books I have written.  The idea for the book began in 1987 when I made it into 10 folders with 3 day diets that included recipes and various nutritious diets.  Just because it was called 'The Watermelon Diet', does not mean that you should eat only watermelon for 3 days.  No, it does not: even for one day. Within the next 10 years it turned into a 235 page book with 21 3-day diets...many more recipes, questions and answers, hints and even shopping lists.  My newest revision is that I have put the calorie count on EVERY MEAL...

A FEW OF THE OTHER THREE DAY DIETS ARE: ..The Almost Ice Cream...Fruit Lovers....Potato Lovers...Pasta Lovers...Hoagie Lovers...Hot and Crispy Wrap....
..Salad Lovers...Rice is Nice...Freeze and Easy and even Bread Lovers and Dairy Lovers.

If you want me to feature one day's material on a special favorite food of yours send me a request by email and I will put it on a post in the future.

HINTS AND ADVICE AND LESSONS IN WEIGHT LOSS

I HAVE BEEN RE-READING A MEETING FROM ALMOST TEN YEARS AGO AND I THINK THAT SOME OF THE FOLLOWING WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR QUEST TO LOSE WEIGHT.

1.  Don't be a helpless victim.  How does a helpless victim think or  speak?
Q.  "I don't know how I can keep from gaining weight on this ship; the midnight buffet is to die for."
A.  When tempted to eat fattening foods in abundance remember how difficult it was to lose the 10 pounds from the last 5 day cruise you took.

2.  If you live in a gated community and have several friends, it seems that you are always being invited to birthday and anniversary parties and you find it difficult not to overindulge. Sit near a slender friend and watch what he or she eats and try to choose similar foods in the same amounts.
3. It is too hot outside and you are trying to talk yourself not to go on your usual walk. Advice: Wear some comfortable shoes and put a disk on with upbeat music and walk the length of your home 25 times.

Q.  "How can you count the number of times that you have been walking?"

A. Wear an outfit with 2 pockets and fill one of them with 25 pennies.  Transfer a penny into the opposite pocket after each round trip.
