DIET MASTERS

DIETMASTERS

MY YEARS AS A FOOD ADDICT

I was a heavy eater by the time I was 5 years old, only it was called a "healthy appetite" in those days, and they called me cute and chubby. By the time I was 18 I was a compulsive overeater. At 5'6", my weight ranged between 125 to 149, but only because I spent part of almost every month on some diet or another. I must have gained and lost more than 500 pounds on various crash diets before I turned 40.I could eat 3 half gallons of ice cream a week and 3 candy bars at the movies. At my favorite Oriental buffet I would start with 6 egg rolls and fill my plate (and myself) so much that the owners lost money. No matter what diet I tried, I dreamed of my next “fix”… boxes of cookies, bags of potato chips or maybe a whole pizza.I’ve always been an upbeat person with a good marriage, two children, and close friends, but on my 40th birthday I was feeling depressed. I took a walk on the beach and realized that my compulsive eating had to stop. I decided that I wanted peace more than pizza and vowed to put my extensive dieting knowledge to work. I re-read all of my material on the subject and designed a way of eating that would satisfy me and finally curb my appetite. My determination paid off in spades and changed my life. The numbers on the scale remained below 130 and before I knew it, I was helping curious friends and neighbors. That was the beginning of a long and exciting career founding and directing Diet Masters, teaching dieting classes and low calorie cooking and even self publishing 6 dieting books. Best of all, my weight has been stable between 124 and 129 for 39 years while I eat food that I enjoy.

THIS BLOG WILL BE EVEN MORE INTERESTING WITH INPUT FROM MY READERS. EMAIL ME WITH YOUR QUESTIONS OR SUBJECTS YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO COVER AT: ADVICE@LOSEWITHLOUISE.COM, AND I WILL ANSWER SOME OF THEM HERE.

SIX WAYS TO BECOME YOUR OWN JENNY CRAIG AND SAVE MONEY

THERE ARE SO MANY COMMERCIALS IN MAGAZINES AND ON TELEVISION FOR NUTRISYSTEM AND JENNY CRAIG TELLING US THAT WE CAN LOSE WEIGHT RAPIDLY AND EASILY LIKE  CELEBRITIES WHO ARE AIR BRUSHED IN THE PICTURES WEARING 7 INCH HEALS.  THESE PEOPLE ARE VERY WELL PAID  FOR THEIR TESTIMONIALS. THEY  ATTEST THAT THE FOOD IS SUPERB. THE COMPANIES SOMETIMES OFFER TO GIVE YOU A FREE WEEK OF FOOD IF YOU PAY FOR ONE MONTH.

I
Since I only wanted to sample it, I purchased a one weeks' supply of Nutrisystem food that was frozen and their top of the line product a year ago in order see if there was any truth in their ads. The cost for the week was $141, since I did not buy a months' supply.   It was four levels under what I could have purchased in the super markets taste wise.It is the customer's responsibility to purchase fresh produce and beverages on their plans.

6 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY DOING IT MY WAY

1.  Stock up on your favorite frozen meals when they are on sale.
2.  Shop for fresh produce at your favorite stand. (they are usually better and less expensive than a super market.
3.  Frozen vegetables are often 50% off..Watch the sales.
4.  There are many frozen pops and sugar free puddings from 15 to 50 calories each.
5.   Keep in mind that you do not have eat all frozen of prepared food.  If you get bored, you can
purchase ready made salads or prepare your own.
6.  You can also look up the calorie counts on the internet when you dine out if you are not saddled to having your food sent to you.  Can you picture bringing a cooked frozen dinner with you when you go out to eat?

ANOTHER GOOD LOW CALORIE DESSERT RECIPE

I RECEIVED A COMPLIMENT ON MY LAST POST AND A REQUEST FOR ANOTHER RECIPE

Hi Diet Lady,

I had all the ingredients in my house for the Apple Pie Cake recipe and I  baked it last night. That recipe was very easy to prepare and unbelievably delicious. You will be proud of me; I let it cool and although I could have devoured the whole thing: I cut one eighth and enjoyed every drop.  Then I made seven individual portions and froze them.  That was the most delicious 135 calories that I have ever eaten.

Since I was a true Diet Master and handled it so well could you post a recipe for low calorie cookies?
I will be eternally grateful, Pat

Dear Pat,

You were a member at my Diet Masters classes and I know that you are a woman of your word.  We have kept in touch since I retired and you have stayed at your goal.

                                                         LOW-CAL MACAROONS

3         egg whites
3         packages sweetener
1/8      teaspoon salt
1/2      teaspoon vanilla
6         tablespoons sugar
3         tablespoons flour
1 1/2  cups grated coconut
1/2     teaspoon almond extract

Beat egg whites until frothy.  Gradually add sugar and sweetener until stiff.  Carefully fold in remaining ingredients.  Drop by 'small spoonfuls' onto a Pam-coated cookie sheet.  Bake in 325 degree oven about 15 minutes.  Makes about 45 macaroons.

Each cookie should be about 21 calories if there are 45 cookies.
Note:  Four very small cookies are one serving.  Eat them slowly, and allow yourself 4 a day.
KEEP IN MIND THAT THE COMPLETE RECIPE IS OVER 900 CALORIES!!

A DELICIOUS LOW CALORIE DESSERT

THE ORIGINAL RECIPE WAS IN A BOOK CALLED "THE BEST OF THE PILLSBURY BAKE OFFS". I DECALORIZED IT AND MY RENDITION TASTES AND LOOKS AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL.

APPLE PIECAKE

4 cups apples, pared and sliced
2 tablespoons sugar
3 packages powdered sweetener
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon diet margarine
1 egg slightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Combine 2 tablespoons sugar, sweetener and cinnamon. Mix with apples and place in a 9-inch oven proof pie plate. Cover with foil and bake in 400-degree oven 20 minutes. Mix margarine and 1/2 cup sugar well. Blend in egg and vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder into creamed mixture. Remove foil from apples. Spread batter over apples and bake in 400-degree oven about 20 minutes, or until cake is golden brown. Serves 6, 185 calories per serving.
Note: That makes a large sized serving. If you cut it into 8 slices it would be only 135 calories.

LOSE WEIGHT AND JUMP FOR JOY

I WOULD USUALLY FINISH THE MEETING WITH WHAT I CALLED WORDS OF WISDOM. THE FOLLOWING WAS ONE OF MY CLASSES FAVORITES AS 'IT TOLD IT LIKE IT IS'.

WOW: I don't promise you that you will lose 20 pounds in 20 days...A realistic amount would be one to two pounds a week. This is not a MIRACLE DIET: NOR IS IT A GIMMICK OR A FAD. Diet Masters is about common sense. It is about educating yourself about food and weight loss.

If you ask a question in class, I will answer it during or after the meeting. You are not alone. Many people have the same eating problems as you do.

With a positive attitude and a desire to lose weight YOU WILL SUCCEED.

I end it with these words and a little 'show'. "WHAT WILL LOSING WEIGHT DO FOR YOU OR TO YOU? IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPIER...LIGHTER...BRIGHTER AND HEALTHIER. (here comes the show) YOU WILL WANT TO KICK OFF YOUR SHOES: SKIP, JUMP, AND SCREAM FOR JOY."

As I say the last sentence I jump and skip and kick my shoes up in the air..

CAN A MAGICAL CREAM REDUCE HEAVY LEGS?

I HAVE A BOOK THAT I PURCHASED IN 1997 CALLED 'LOSING IT' BY LAURA FRASER

I have been re-reading it recently and it is amazing how much research had gone into it. I am going to write about thigh cream today.

My own memories about this product are that almost every beauty salon seemed to be making more money from the thigh cream they sold than working on hair and nails with much less effort.

Herbalife International marketed the product and named it Thermojetics Body Contour Cream. Someone else made their own version of the cream and named it Smooth Contours and sold it to Nutri/System; the weight loss chain. Some newspaper said it reminded them of strained spinach baby food. Different versions of the product were marketed and many companies earned millions of dollars on a product that did not work. The FDA investigated it, and finally took it off the market.

EIGHT HINTS TO HELP YOU LOSE BETTER

I USED TO END EACH DIET MASTERS MEETING WITH WHAT I CALLED, 'WORDS OF WISDOM'. THEY WOULD HELP MY STUDENTS STAY FOCUSED BETWEEN CLASSES.

1. Don't ever feel inferior because you are seeking help with your weight problem. Along with your new slender body, you are gaining a knowledge of how to enjoy the foods you like best, and hopefully stay trim for the rest of your life.
2. Don't plunk food into your mouth between meals. Talk yourself into being strong. Examples:
"It isn't worth it..I do not really need this..I AM GOING TO HAVE A WEIGHT LOSS THIS WEEK".
3. Watch out when eating high fiber foods. A medical journal stated that bran may irritate your intestines if taken in large amounts on a regular basis. Start by having 1 teaspoon a day for a week and then double it. If you start by having one-fourth of a cup the first day it forms gas.
4. When some people lose weight on a diet and regain it, they tell friends that the fat slipped back. Pounds do not SLIP BACK, YOU HAVE TO OVEREAT TO GAIN WEIGHT.
5. If someone has a light cold and they gain weight they often blame it from taking sugary cough drops. The average cough drop is 10 to 15 calories each and most people do not take more than four a day.
6. If you are tempted to have a second portion or want a fattening dessert, talk to yourself and say, "In 45 seconds it will just be a memory and it is not worth it".
7. Step by step, you learn how to lose weight and also how to keep it off. With this blog, you will learn the low calorie way to grocery shop, how to order in restaurants, and I give you lessons on how to cook the slim way.
8. Finding the right diet for YOU is just like finding your own buried treasure after searching for it for years. You will always know where it is at.

FIVE DIETS FROM YEARS AGO

WOMEN WERE NOT INTERESTED IN DIETING UNTIL ABOUT 1920. BEFORE THAT THERE WERE THE 'GIBSON GIRLS'. IT WAS FASHIONABLE TO BE HEAVY WITH A SMALLISH WAIST LINE AND A LARGE BUST AND HUGE HIPS. (no, I was not around then)

After that, we had a era when women were called Flappers. They wore very short dresses and 'thin was in'. They danced to a melody called the Charleston. Thin was definitely in!

1. One of the worst diet aids that was sold were 'live tape worms'.
2. Another diet consisted of bananas and skim milk and nothing else, for days on end.
3. Laxatives became a popular but dangerous reducing product.
4. Doctors began to warn patients of the dangers of being overweight, but they had no healthy advice to give them.
5. Pills soon became popular and were very dangerous. Doctor Max Jacobson, who was known as Dr. Feelgood, ruined many well known peoples' lives, including Johnny Mathis, Yule Brenner,
some of the Kennedys and Winston Churchill.

Note: Through the years, until today, there have been many dangerous diets that cause health issues and even death. Live by the old adage: "If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't".

HOW CHARLOTTE LOST THREE POUNDS

ON JUNE 14th CHARLOTE WROTE THAT SHE WOULD STAY ON HER DIET 100% FOR A WEEK IF I WROTE A DIET POEM AND SHE PROMISED TO WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN THAT SHE ATE. SHE LOST 3 POUNDS. FOR HER EFFORT I AM GOING TO WRITE ANOTHER POEM.

SONG (CLEMENTINE)

At a fat farm
Costing highly
Working hard to lose some weight
How I sweated, how I fretted
How I cursed my awful fate.

I was pummeled
I was pounded

Til each ounce screamed for relief
And at last they gave me time off.
To have lunch -- one lettuce leaf.

I wish now I'd
Saved my money
'Cause the place I lost my weight
Was the inside of my wallet
I learned my lesson much too late.

Note: I have been to four different spas and my favorite was Canyon Ranch in Arizona.

5 REASONS NOT TO OVEREAT

DO YOU EVER RELATE TO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS WHEN YOU OVEREAT?

1. It can give you health problems, such as indigestion.
2. Causes you to spend extra money on food.
3. Makes you feel defeated; especially if you are striving to lose weight.
4. Makes you feel unattractive.
5. Many of the clothes in your closet begin to get tight.

THAT IS WHAT OVEREATING AND GOING ON CRAZY DIETS DOES TO YOU

HOW IMPROPER EATING CAN BE DANGEROUS
(The following story was on 20/20)

A group of young women exercised every day and ate a similar diet. They looked fit and lean. For breakfast, they would have a dry bagel with black coffee.
Lunch would consisted of a big salad without dressing. It contained lots of vegetables but did not include any protein foods such as fish, meat or cheese.
Dinner consisted of spaghetti with marinara sauce.

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THEIR MEALS CONSISTED OF ALMOST NO PROTEIN, NO CALCIUM AND NO FAT.
They were examined by a physician and they had the inner body and bones of 80 year old women.

ARE CALORIES CORRECT ON PACKAGES?

MANY OF THE CALORIE COUNTS THAT RESTAURANTS AND FOOD PACKAGES LIST ARE SLIGHTLY INCORRECT AND OTHERS MUCH MORE OR LESS THAN THEY ARE.

I save articles about dieting that interests me. The following material was written by Susan Salisbury. It appeared in the Palm Beach Post on January 10, 2010. The calories may have been corrected since then., but I thought you would enjoy reading these examples.

Note: The FDA allows manufacturers a 20 percent accuracy leeway in listing calories and other information on the packaging.
1. Denny's grits, served with butter (86 calories listed, contained 258)
Note: A small side of grits without butter is usually only about 100 calories.
2. Lean Cuisine shrimp and angel hair pasta tested at 319 calories while the box stated 250.
3. P.F. Chang's Sichuan-style asparagus (260 listed, contained 558)

The following are foods that were listed HIGHER than the actual calories.

1. Ruby Tuesday toast (171 listed, contained 110)
2. Domino's thin crust cheese pizza, per slice (212 listed, contained 141)
3. P.F. Chang's Cantonese Shrimp (386 listed, contained 268)
4. Taco Bell nachos (349 listed, contained 268)

PLEASE NOTE: I MENTIONED EARLIER THAT THE CALORIES THAT WERE LISTED IN JANUARY, 2010 MAY BE CORRECTED BY NOW.

5 MORE WAYS TO STAY FOCUSED ON A DIET

THE MORE KNOWLEDGE YOU ABSORB ABOUT DIETING THE EASIER LOSING WEIGHT BECOMES

1. Know what your 'trigger foods' are and JUST DON'T KEEP THEM IN THE HOUSE.
note: Trigger foods are foods that your have trouble resisting and tend to overeat.

2. To lose weight permanently; it is advisable to be aware of calories. For instance: 1 chocolate from a box is 65 calories BUT 10 of those candies =650 calories. Be aware that if you read some dieting books they can be giving you the wrong information. One book that I scanned recently mentioned that a half of a cantaloupe was 92 calories. Cantaloupes come in various sizes and it is best to find out the calories for a cup of that melon which is 50 when it is cubed. One half of a cup of fried Chinese noodles are between 100 to 130 calories.
note: During my before Diet Masters days, I often ate half of a large bowl of them while waiting for the meal to arrive.

3. Most vegetables are filling and very low in calories and healthy. Keep in mind that eight thin stalks of asparagus are only 8 calories. One cup of sliced fresh mushrooms are 20 calories. One cup of lettuce is 10 calories and a whole cup of sliced cucumbers are only 20 calories.

4. An expensive, but great way to lose weight if you are desperate, is to purchase tooth whitening trays and put them in right after you eat meals and leave them in until your next meal.
note: It is a crazy idea, but I have met people who have tried it and it worked for them.

5. Don't try to see how fast you can lose weight. It is best not to skip meals. Concentrate on eating a well balanced diet that includes healthy foods that you enjoy.

FUNNY STORY ABOUT ME

When I was a teenager, I lusted for straight blond hair...deep set blue eyes and a button nose along with a SLENDER FIGURE. 'ONE OUT OF 4 AIN'T BAD'.

5 WAYS TO STAY FOCUSED AND LOSE WEIGHT

EACH GROUP OF HINTS WILL WALK YOU THROUGH THE JOURNEY OF FINDING A MORE SLENDER YOU

1. Diet Masters ideas are interesting and effective and you will not have to suffer with eating foods that you do not like. There are no forbidden foods on the program unless they are foods that you cannot or will not control. I try to make losing weight an education in eating right and FUN.

2. So many people who were on other programs ask; how many breads..how many fruits..etc?
MY ANSWER: It all depends on you...If you have moved to a community where all of the apartments had the same floor plan, they will not look the same after you furnish them.
You decorated your apartment to suit your taste. When it comes to food and dieting, there is no need for you to eat the same foods and the same amounts as everyone else. When people come to my classes or to a 'private one to one consultation' I personalize my program with their likes and dislikes in mind.

3. Two helpful hints. If you are tempted to overeat; use some breath spray. If you start nibbling, write down every mouthful you eat in your journal. Both of these hints are helpful in deterring you from over eating.

4. If you come home from work and are tired and you open the refrigerator and are ready to look for snacks...CLOSE THAT DOOR AND TAKE A NAP.

5. Don't skip breakfast and feel entitled to snacking all day long with the wrong foods.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DIETING LECTURER?

MANY PEOPLE GO TO DIETING GROUPS OR FOR PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS AND ARE NOT PLEASED WITH THE DEMEANOR OF THEIR TEACHER.

A GOOD DIETING TEACHER IS ALL OF THE FOLLOWING

1. Knowledgeable....They can answer all of your questions.
2. Gentle and kind...It is difficult enough to be dieting and some teachers are harsh.
3. Ability to listen...Some of them are all 'me..me..me' and not interested in your questions.
4. Positive thinkers..No doom and gloom. They also give you hope when you have a bad week.
5. A good example weight wise. It is difficult to see a heavy person telling you how to lose weight
6. Humorous...We all enjoy someone with a good sense of humor to lift our spirits.

I know that I sound vain, but that is exactly how my members viewed me.. I loved what I was doing and it was my joy in life to work with people who wanted to lose weight.

I recently retired from doing the large classes and now teach private classes at my home or over the phone. I hope to be THE DIET LADY forever and ever.

RESTAURANT DINNER MENUS THAT WORK

THERE ARE DIFFERENT RULES FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE

This may sound prejudiced, but not all peoples' willpower are created equal. If you tend to eat whatever is served to you in restaurants you have to set the following rule for yourself.
NO BREAD-POTATOES OR OTHER STARCHES AT DINNER NO SAUCES OR BUTTER ADDED TO YOUR FOOD AT THE TABLE

THE FOLLOWING ARE FOR THE CAREFUL CALORIE EATERS

At all meals: always order butter, sauces and gravies on the side and ask for your food to be cooked with very little butter or oil. Do not order deep fat fried food. Do not double starch at dinner unless you are having a low calorie sandwich. If the bread is sliced thick that is served with your sandwich, eat half of it with the bread and the other half with a fork and knife. Keep in mind that a large roll or potato is a double starch. Don't eat rich desserts such as brownies, cakes or pies unless you can fit it into a thimble. OK, if I sound harsh, you can have 2 fortune cookies. The best way to not feel deprived when others are eating dessert is to promise yourself your 'just dessert' at home. Anything you want for under 100 calories like a Healthy Choice Mocha Swirl Bar which is my favorite.

Dinner No. 1....Choose 1
Small lean steak or other lean meat
Grilled or blackened chicken or fish (fairly small portions)
Steamed fish or lobster (good sized portion)

Plus salad with dressing on side, and steamed vegetables(if no butter or oil has been added)
Always dip your empty fork into your dressing, never pour the dressing on the salad
One starch

Dinner No.2
Big Salad with choice of:
Grilled or blackened chicken - fish - or shrimp with no croutons, dressing on the side
One starch

Dinner No. 3
Bowl any soup other than creamed
(you may have onion soup, IF you omit the bread and cheese topping)
Plus salad - dressing on the side...no croutons
One starch

Dinner No. 4

Oriental - Choose 1
First choice...House soup for 2 - (eat it all) WARNING: Do not eat any of the dry fried noodles in the bowl .
Second choice..Steamed shrimp or chicken with lots of steamed vegetables. If you can stop at a half cup: allow yourself a half cup of rice
White or brown sauce on the side(these sauces are like a gravy. Limit yourself to a half cup)
If the meal is not filling enough, order a side of your favorite steamed vegetables
Note* I did not forget: you can have your 2 fortune cookies.

A BRIBE THAT I CANNOT IGNORE

I JUST RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A READER WITH A REQUEST FOR MORE POEMS
Hi Louise,

I was ready to cheat on my diet yesterday and started to read your two poems and it put me on the straight and narrow. Could you please..please..write some more on your next post! If you will do this favor for me, I will make make a written vow to stay on my diet 100% for a full week and tape it onto my refrigerator.

Thanks, Charlotte

Dear Charlotte,

That sounds a little like blackmail but for the sake of weight loss, I am going to supply you and the rest of my readers with two good ones. Please send me another email a week from tomorrow and let me know how it went.

Rooting for you gal,
The diet lady

SONG: (MY BONNIE LIES OVER THE OCEAN)

My body is all too well rounded,
I wish that I knew what to do.
You would be simply astounded,
At the things I've been through.

CHORUS: Bring back, bring back,
The curves that I lost yesterday.
Take back, take back,
The pounds that keep coming my way.

I've had every shot known to mankind,
And pills, yellow, pink, green and blue.
I think that I'll have to try magic,
Oh, where can I learn some voodoo?

REPEAT CHORUS.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

QUESTION

My bank account is awfully slim.
Why isn't that the shape I'm in?

Note: Charlotte, I am giving you an extra poem as you might think that because the second one was short I did not for fill my share of the bargain.

TRUTH

There's a special niche in Hades
Reserved for Cousin Kate.
Who, everytime she sees me, says,

THREE THINGS TO PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE

I HAVE A JOKE FOR YOU TODAY AND TWO UPBEAT DIETING POEMS

JOKE

TWO FRIENDS MEET: THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL IS THEIR DIALOGUE. WE WILL CALL THEM MIKE AND IKE.

Mike: "I am losing weight."
Ike: "How?"
Mike: "I can eat anything that I want for 15 minutes."
Ike: "How can you lose weight like that?"
Mike: "That is only half of the diet..You have to run for the next two hours."

THE TURTLE HAS IT MADE

Behold the turtle in her shell
Her figure's not so hot.
She doesn't move so very much
Nor shake the fat she's got.
But she is luckier than I
When I've had too much bread
I have to face the mirror of truth-
She simply pulls in her head.

HOW TO

There once was a gal named Louise
Who said, "You may eat what you please.
But eat somewhat less
After that, as you'll guess,
Losing weight will be simply a breeze."

THREE EXCUSES FOR GOING OFF A DIET

THE DIET LADY HAS AN ANSWER FOR ALL THREE OF THE FOLLOWING EXCUSES

1. "I have a Hiatal Hernia and the raw fruits and and vegetables on most diets do not agree with me".
Diet Lady: Just steam or roast the vegetables and poach the fruit.

2. "I don't like fish".
Diet Lady: There is no need to eat fish in any way, shape or form if you do not like it. You can always have lean meat, chicken, eggs and cottage to name a few foods with protein".

3. "My friends are telling me that I am getting more wrinkles".
Diet Lady: They are not your 'real friends' and are jealous of your trim figure. DUMP THEM!!!

HOW CAN FAT FREE FOODS MAKE YOU FAT?

THE STORY OF THE SKINNY WAITRESS AND HER VERY OVERWEIGHT GRANDMOTHER

As I was ordering dressing on the side for my salad and no croutons at Friday's a few years ago our waitress who was really too thin asked if I was on a diet. She began to talk about diet foods. She was living with her grandmother who was very heavy and her house was filled with sugar free and low fat foods from ice cream to cookies to crackers and Pringles.

The waitress did not like that food and just nibbled a little while the grandmother inhaled large amounts out of the bags and boxes.

The lesson learned here is that if you eat large amounts of low calorie foods you will gain weight rather than lose it.

TWO WAYS TO SAVE 300 CALORIES OR MORE

WHEN WE EAT AT A RESTAURANT WE OFTEN ADD EMBELLISHMENTS TO OUR FOOD THAT DOUBLES THE ORIGINAL CALORIES.

Steamed Little neck Clams

Six of those little clams total under 75 calories. If you dip them each a few times in the melted butter it can easily cost you close to 400 calories.

Pecan Waffles at the Waffle House

I must admit, they are delicious and I would not hesitate to order them. Their calories were not listed on the stats. The plain waffle is only about 304 calories. The pecan waffle is loaded with pecans and has to at least add 150 calories more. The average waffle eater does not look to see if they have sugar free syrup and it does not taste as good as regular so they pour some on the waffle and half way through they pour a little more which would add up to 1/4 of a cup, adding 200 calories. There was a little scoop of butter on top which was only 100. In round figures (pardon the pun) that would be a total of 750 calories.

HOW I ORDER AND EAT A PECAN WAFFLE

I order it without the butter. If I do not see a container with lite syrup, I use the regular syrup and pour a very small amount at the edge of the plate and gingerly dip a few of the bites into the syrup. I do not usually care for sugar free. MY HUSBAND ORDERS SOMETHING ELSE AND I OFFER HIM A FOURTH OF MINE WHICH HE GLADLY ACCEPTS.
Deducting the one fourth of a waffle that my husband ate, my total calories for the meal is 425.
Keep in mind, I am not dieting. I have been on maintenance for over 39 years.

If a member of mine called to confess that they had the 750 calorie waffle and ask how she could finish the rest of the day with not gaining weight. I would ask her a few questions about what she usually liked of lunch and dinner and come up with an answer. Since she had a late breakfast and was really full, I said that having a fairly early dinner might be the answer. It could be almost any meal on my program as they are almost all under 350 calories and then she could make a fruit smoothie later or have one piece of fresh fruit or a nice salad.

TWO WAYS TO HELP KEEP YOU ON YOUR DIET

THEY ARE THE THOUGHTS THAT I HAVE IN THIS POST

1." There is no food that can make me as happy as the joy I will derive from being slim."

2. Thinking of becoming a quitter?
Don't do it!
Look in the mirror and visualize yourself
looking the way you want to look. The taste
of the food lasts only a few seconds. It isn't worth it!

If you are tempted to cheat on your diet; read and re-read my thoughts and words and try to indoctrinate them into your way of eating and thinking.

14 WORDS THAT MEAN THE SAME AS SUGAR

MANY PEOPLE WHO READ THE INGREDIENTS ON THE PACKAGE DO NOT REALIZE THAT THE FOLLOWING WORDS MEAN EXACTLY THE SAME THING: SUGAR

When you read the word Sugars listed as a part of the ingredients on the package you 'think that you know that if it is not listed as the first ingredient it might not be high in sugar'.

The following two examples will explain my point.
1. Angel Food Cake Mix...140 claories for 1/12th of a cake..Sugars 23....In this case, sugar is the only product that is used that contains sugar in the recipe and it is listed first. Sugar is 4 calories per gram which tells us that the sugar in the small slice of cake is 92 calories which is about 2 tablespoons.

2. Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey ...190 calories for a 2 bar smallish package and 12 grams of sugar. (Once we open the package it is a 'given' that we eat them both). In this case sugar is not listed first. Whole Grain Oats which sounds very healthy is listed first and Sugar is slipped in after it followed by Brown Sugar Syrup and Honey. The total sugar calories for the pack is 48 which is just under a tablespoon that is 50..This tells us that about 25% of the calories are from sugar.

THE 14 WORDS THAT MEAN SUGAR

corn syrup...fructose...fruit juice concentrate...glucose...dextrose...high-fructose corn syrup.....brown sugar...honey...maltose...lactose...molasses...raw sugar...sucrose...invert sugar

DO YOU 'REALLY' WISH THAT YOU COULD LOSE

THERE WAS A SONG THAT I BARELY REMEMBER ABOUT WISHING, BUT IT WAS NOT ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT.

It was similar to this: "If you wish upon a star..it doesn't matter where you are, your dream will come true."

The following words may also be a part of it: "Wishing will make it so; just keep on wishing that's the way to go.
................................................................................................................................................................................
Let's get out of LaLa Land and into the real world. Wishing and desire are very nice, but they are not the answer to losing the weight you want and need to. Just follow my advice in the next post and you will succeed in losing the weight you want to.

My Realistic Rendition to the Song

Trying can make it so, just keep on trying, that's the way to go.

FIVE WAYS TO LOSE 20 POUNDS HAPPILY

THIS IS NOT ONLY ABOUT LOSING 20 POUNDS, BUT ABOUT LOSING THE AMOUNT YOU FEEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU, AND HAVING SUCCESS AT KEEPING IT OFF HAPPILY

1. Get a pen and paper out and prepare to make some notes.
2. Look back on your history with various diets.
3. Write down which ones worked well for you and which did not. (by worked well; I do not mean which diets you lost weight quickly with)
4. Analyse how long you kept the weight off after losing it.
5. Did you enjoy the food on that diet and do you think that you would be able to eat in that manner permanently with a few additions? If your answer is YES and the timing is right, make a shopping list and 'GO FOR THE GOLD'.

SHARING MY PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS STORY

After going on close to 100 diets similar to the ones that I mention in my story on the beginning of the Blog I was mentally ready to stop 'playing the yo yo game'. In order to succeed it is important that you are serious about making permanent changes.

I looked through the various dieting material that I had on hand and one item caught my eye..It said that you should not go on diets that left you feeling deprived as the results would not last long. Different diets work well for various people, so find an eating plan that feels right for you.

If you find the right plan for yourself and need a little advice from time to time, send me an email with your questions and I may be able to help.

COME WITH ME TO THE LAND OF THIN, THE DOOR IS OPEN, I WILL HELP YOU IN.

"THOSE DELIGHTFUL POEMS ON YOUR BLOG"

SOME COMMENTS FROM ONE OF MY READERS

Hi Louise,

I still have a smile on my face from reading the delightful, witty poems that you wrote on your last post. Did you copy them from a book, or did you write them yourself?
Much thanks,
Sandy

Dear Sandy,

Thank you for your kind words. I taught several classes a week for many years and would end my meetings with a dieting poem that my members enjoyed. Most of the poems were written by me but I had a very talented volunteer who helped me at the desk and she also wrote several of them.

Someone in class asked why I did not put them into a book and the rest was history. About 20 years ago I self published them into a book titled, "Poems To Lose Weight By" and ordered 1,000 copies. I sold them to members and a few spas. These books are not for sale at this time as I only have a few left but I may have them re-printed in the future. There are 57 pages and about 150 poems.
What better way to end this post than to finish with a poem.
My best, The Diet Lady

THE DESSERT CART

"This" and "that"
And "these" and "those"
Are words that added to my woes.
But if I'd like
A bunch of beaus
I'd better add
A lot of "no's."

A FEW SATURDAY DIET POEMS

A NEW ME

When is the clapping going to stop?
And all the salutes from the band?
I am a star at the drug store!
A hit at the grocery stand!

"How did you do it?" they asked me.
"What magical pill did you take?
You're so much thinner than once you were.
Tell us for Heaven's sake!"

Here is my secret, dear fan club. Repeat it at will anywhere.
I've latched onto two brand new seasonings,
I'm eating with thought and with care.

MOTTO

Whatever else you try to do
Really doesn't matter--
As long as you remember this--
It's got to be "MIND OVER PLATTER."

3 WAYS TO MAKE LOW CAL PASTA RECIPES

MANY OF THESE HINTS WILL NOT TAKE AWAY FROM THE FLAVOR OR APPEARANCE

Way 1. Use any type of pasta that you wish. Multi grain or whole wheat are considered the healthiest.
If you are dieting, keep in mind that pasta is 210 per cup. Limit yourself to that amount if you are a female and IF YOU HAVE NOT ADDED GROUND MEAT TO THE SAUCE. Now is the part that can make it a beautiful exciting dish. Steam some sliced or cut up vegetables such as carrots, yellow and green and/or orange peppers, yellow and zucchini squash, onions, black olives, mushrooms and whatever vegetables that suite your fancy.
Mix the pasta and sauce and about 1 cup of vegetables into it and then spoon some more of the vegetables on top.
Hint: Prepare a large amount of the vegetables and save them to serve as a side dish for the next day.

WAY 2: If you like a large amount of pasta but also want to stay 100% on your diet, cook a spaghetti squash that has been cut, face down, in about 1 inch of water in the microwave until soft. WARNING: BE SURE TO TAKE THE SEEDS OUT OF THE SQUASH BEFORE COOKING. Add as much of the spaghetti squash as you wish to 1 cup of cooked pasta and mix in 3/4 cup of jarred spaghetti sauce which is 60 calories a half cup or less.
Hint: I recommend taking out the seeds from the squash before cooking, as it is difficult to remove them from the cooked squash.
Hint: Ask someone in the produce department cut the squash in half for you, it is a difficult job for most of us.
Hint: Most spaghetti squashes are large and you can make several packets of it after it is cooked and cooled to put in the freezer.

Note: Regular spaghetti is 210 calories per cup and Spaghetti squash totals 38 calories a cup.

Way 3: Purchase lean ground beef or turkey and crumble and saute' until the meat is cooked. Drain well to get all of the saturated fat out of the bottom of the pan and gently pat the meat where more fat has adhered to before pouring sauce over meat.
Hint: Saute' some chopped onions with the beef if desired.
Hint: I might be an old fashioned girl but a smart one. I no longer make my spaghetti sauce. Like most people in my generation it was what we called 'from scratch' and consisted mostly of
garlic, canned stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste. Many of the jarred spaghetti sauces of today are better than most of those that Italian restaurants serve. My favorite is not the lowest in calories. It is Classico Four Cheese and is 80 calories a half cup.
