WOMEN WERE NOT INTERESTED IN DIETING UNTIL ABOUT 1920. BEFORE THAT THERE WERE THE 'GIBSON GIRLS'. IT WAS FASHIONABLE TO BE HEAVY WITH A SMALLISH WAIST LINE AND A LARGE BUST AND HUGE HIPS. (no, I was not around then)
After that, we had a era when women were called Flappers. They wore very short dresses and 'thin was in'. They danced to a melody called the Charleston. Thin was definitely in!
1. One of the worst diet aids that was sold were 'live tape worms'.
2. Another diet consisted of bananas and skim milk and nothing else, for days on end.
3. Laxatives became a popular but dangerous reducing product.
4. Doctors began to warn patients of the dangers of being overweight, but they had no healthy advice to give them.
5. Pills soon became popular and were very dangerous. Doctor Max Jacobson, who was known as Dr. Feelgood, ruined many well known peoples' lives, including Johnny Mathis, Yule Brenner,
some of the Kennedys and Winston Churchill.
Note: Through the years, until today, there have been many dangerous diets that cause health issues and even death. Live by the old adage: "If it sounds too good to be true, it isn't".
