WHEN WE EAT AT A RESTAURANT WE OFTEN ADD EMBELLISHMENTS TO OUR FOOD THAT DOUBLES THE ORIGINAL CALORIES.
Steamed Little neck Clams
Six of those little clams total under 75 calories. If you dip them each a few times in the melted butter it can easily cost you close to 400 calories.
Pecan Waffles at the Waffle House
I must admit, they are delicious and I would not hesitate to order them. Their calories were not listed on the stats. The plain waffle is only about 304 calories. The pecan waffle is loaded with pecans and has to at least add 150 calories more. The average waffle eater does not look to see if they have sugar free syrup and it does not taste as good as regular so they pour some on the waffle and half way through they pour a little more which would add up to 1/4 of a cup, adding 200 calories. There was a little scoop of butter on top which was only 100. In round figures (pardon the pun) that would be a total of 750 calories.
HOW I ORDER AND EAT A PECAN WAFFLE
I order it without the butter. If I do not see a container with lite syrup, I use the regular syrup and pour a very small amount at the edge of the plate and gingerly dip a few of the bites into the syrup. I do not usually care for sugar free. MY HUSBAND ORDERS SOMETHING ELSE AND I OFFER HIM A FOURTH OF MINE WHICH HE GLADLY ACCEPTS.
Deducting the one fourth of a waffle that my husband ate, my total calories for the meal is 425.
Keep in mind, I am not dieting. I have been on maintenance for over 39 years.
If a member of mine called to confess that they had the 750 calorie waffle and ask how she could finish the rest of the day with not gaining weight. I would ask her a few questions about what she usually liked of lunch and dinner and come up with an answer. Since she had a late breakfast and was really full, I said that having a fairly early dinner might be the answer. It could be almost any meal on my program as they are almost all under 350 calories and then she could make a fruit smoothie later or have one piece of fresh fruit or a nice salad.
