MANY PEOPLE WHO READ THE INGREDIENTS ON THE PACKAGE DO NOT REALIZE THAT THE FOLLOWING WORDS MEAN EXACTLY THE SAME THING: SUGAR
When you read the word Sugars listed as a part of the ingredients on the package you 'think that you know that if it is not listed as the first ingredient it might not be high in sugar'.
The following two examples will explain my point.
1. Angel Food Cake Mix...140 claories for 1/12th of a cake..Sugars 23....In this case, sugar is the only product that is used that contains sugar in the recipe and it is listed first. Sugar is 4 calories per gram which tells us that the sugar in the small slice of cake is 92 calories which is about 2 tablespoons.
2. Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey ...190 calories for a 2 bar smallish package and 12 grams of sugar. (Once we open the package it is a 'given' that we eat them both). In this case sugar is not listed first. Whole Grain Oats which sounds very healthy is listed first and Sugar is slipped in after it followed by Brown Sugar Syrup and Honey. The total sugar calories for the pack is 48 which is just under a tablespoon that is 50..This tells us that about 25% of the calories are from sugar.
THE 14 WORDS THAT MEAN SUGAR
corn syrup...fructose...fruit juice concentrate...glucose...dextrose...high-fructose corn syrup.....brown sugar...honey...maltose...lactose...molasses...raw sugar...sucrose...invert sugar
