MY YEARS AS A FOOD ADDICT

I was a heavy eater by the time I was 5 years old, only it was called a "healthy appetite" in those days, and they called me cute and chubby. By the time I was 18 I was a compulsive overeater. At 5'6", my weight ranged between 125 to 149, but only because I spent part of almost every month on some diet or another. I must have gained and lost more than 500 pounds on various crash diets before I turned 40.I could eat 3 half gallons of ice cream a week and 3 candy bars at the movies. At my favorite Oriental buffet I would start with 6 egg rolls and fill my plate (and myself) so much that the owners lost money. No matter what diet I tried, I dreamed of my next “fix”… boxes of cookies, bags of potato chips or maybe a whole pizza.I’ve always been an upbeat person with a good marriage, two children, and close friends, but on my 40th birthday I was feeling depressed. I took a walk on the beach and realized that my compulsive eating had to stop. I decided that I wanted peace more than pizza and vowed to put my extensive dieting knowledge to work. I re-read all of my material on the subject and designed a way of eating that would satisfy me and finally curb my appetite. My determination paid off in spades and changed my life. The numbers on the scale remained below 130 and before I knew it, I was helping curious friends and neighbors. That was the beginning of a long and exciting career founding and directing Diet Masters, teaching dieting classes and low calorie cooking and even self publishing 6 dieting books. Best of all, my weight has been stable between 124 and 129 for 39 years while I eat food that I enjoy.

SOME HINTS THAT MIGHT HELP


IF YOU ARE CRAVING COOKIES BUY JUST ONE MEDIUM COOKIE: NOT A PACKAGE

Keep in mind, that there are many fairly large cookies that can rack up between 150 to 500 calories. All of us have a different estimation of what we consider medium or large..Read the calorie counts.

WILLPOWER HAS TO BE BUILT

We all have one mouth, a nose, two eyes and 2 ears, but some of us have willpower and others do not..IT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE BUILT. There is a constant struggle of being able to control the amount of food that we eat or having food coax us to overeat...WE CAN WIN!!!

A MEMBER WHO REACHED GOAL MISSED CHEESEBURGERS,FRIES AND COKE

When she asked me if she could fit it in her maintenance program I gave it some thought and came up with the following solution. I told her that going to restaurants like Chili's and Friday's should be taboo for these foods as it could be about 1300 calories for the cheeseburger and fries alone.

My suggestion was to get a junior cheeseburger with a small fries and a diet coke at a fast food restaurant for lunch or dinner no more than ounce or twice a week. It would total about 600 calories for the fries and the cheeseburger. Wendy's has a way to save 90 more calories. Their value fries are only 230 calories rather that 320 for the small fries.

ONE LAST HINT FOR THIS POST

Janice, who comes to my home for a private lesson each week, mentioned that she uses 2% milk that is 130 calories a cup because she does not like skim or 1% milk. Most people do not realize that it is very high in saturated fat. I recommended Skim Plus which has a great consistency and color. I mentioned Skim Plus in a recent post and told my readers that most people visualize that 2% milk means that only 2% of the calories are from fat, but the realization is that about 33% of the calories are from fat. She bought it and called to say she loves the Skim Plus.
